Hey! Remember that trailer of Zillion 3D posted on YouTube in December 2012? Well, the mod is now available on moddb:

http://www.moddb.com/mods/zillion-3d

Here's the Zillion 3D website for more info: http://zillion3d.wordpress.com/

I could download it just fine, and I'm not a member of Moddb.

The Zillion 3D website's file link goes to 4shared, which requires membership, IIRC. I would try moddb "again", Tricob. Wink

Actually, I misread it; the "Members only" portion was on the bottom right, and was pertaining to the option of uploading a download. Anyway, thanks for your help. Smile

Edit: Just tried it out. I've only gotten to Level 2 so far, though I eventually got 100% of everything. I really like what I see here, and look forward to playing more. The levels aren't unusually large, but they're quite difficult. I'd say the pacing of this one is nearly twice as fast as that of Wolf3D, even though the doors and the Pushwalls still move the same exact speed.

Warning to players: *Don't* start on Difficulty Four unless you're absolutely masochistic. Smile

The game uses characters from the Japanese series "Akai Koudan Zillion". If you want to take a peak at what the series is like, then here you go. Smile

Progress report: On Level 8 so far; defeated one boss and found a secret level.

Just beat the first episode. Level 8 was a very good way to wrap up the last non-boss level. The final boss map was good as well, but an item that increases your ammo capacity ... it's just badly needed in this sequence, IMO. I understand what 33 Games was trying to do here, but you run out of ammo so quickly, you end up spending more time backtracking than you actually do fighting enemies.

Tricob,

This brings back a memory of one of DTrade's mods that I was testing while converting it to SDL. The area where the final boss should have been was inexplicably a Hitler ghost (made to look like something else of course), but this meant the game wouldn't end. I made the assumption that DTrade meant to put the real Hitler in that spot, but never tested it, so it slipped by him. Brian agreed, so that's how I "fixed" it.

Let me tell you, after I changed it, it was the best boss battle I ever experienced. I had to backtrack through almost the whole map to pick up the plentiful-but-scattered ammo in all the cramped winding landscape I had left behind, always being stalked by Hitler, only getting a few shots at him here and there before I had to hunt for more ammo. When I finally killed him, it was incredibly satisfying. That battle really had my heart rate going, let me tell you! Laughing

Was that what 33 Games was trying to accomplish?

I'm quite sure it was. I seriously doubt the map was deliberately designed to be tedious. Granted, it did have its points of tension and suspense. It's possible that the map was play-tested with the mouse, and that device does allow you to travel more quickly (assuming the mouse sensitivity is cranked high enough).

It's located in the very first room of the level.

Indeed, you'll die very quickly if you don't approach the rooms one step at a time. In this case, it still works because of the mod's amazingly fluid framerate. It seems nothing ever slows it down, and that leads to extremely tight controls.

yes good in that matter but ammo limited to 48, losing health too fast and repeated enemies and rooms are annoying.

Yes 48 ammo limit got annoying fast. I was looking for a back pack but couldn't find one!

Just finished the last of the mod today, finishing off Episode Two. I ran the last six levels of that episode in the v1.1 update. Good stuff overall, but I thought the way to access that second key in Level 8 was far too cryptic. I never could find the area without examining the map in ChaosEdit first. I think exposing one or two squares of the "second key area" through machinery ... that would've made the search far less perplexing for me. Smile

Played it a bit today.

Nice mod, love the art consistency and originality, the fast pace, different setting, the fresh anime look.

Art:
Love the consistency, death animation...but walls are too repeatative and mostly recolored versions of previous ones. A bit boring.

Mapping:
I understand that it's a spaceship (?) of some kind so he tried to be bulky, simmetrical and realisitic...Still, very boring repeatative mapping (well, get's a bit better on later levels).
Too many corridors, no open spaces, too many doors....you seem like running endless runner.
Mapping is too linear, no exploration...well...if one wanted to simulate a platformer feeling - then it fits.
Like how many enemies are "dormant" and not coming out all at once, very surprising, especially in tight places.

Gameplay: - love the pace, fast moving and fast-reacting enemies...this is indeed a fresh change of pace.
But enemies so far seem to have the same health more or less, which is boring.

Lack of interesting coding changes is a bit dissapointing.
If it's space - I'd make the treasure float (up and down)

Overall very nice work, very original and inspiring, fast-paced, challenging, relatively immersive and consistent artwise.
I enjoy such mods.
I love the idea of retro platformers put into 3D...who knows...maybe Keen one day Smile I think the pace, the sounds, music, reaction time - really carefully chosen to look and feel like a platformer...which is brilliant. Never seen before how you can make a 3D game feel like a platformer...this is ispiring in that sense.

Yes, more logical size-wise.
