@gerolf: FlatRock Software, who owns a lot of the old SoftDisk games and say that they have the source code to them all.

Borland 3.1... isn't that what we've used for Wolf3D?

Catacomb is in Pascal, which is interesting to see.

For the record, Javier of the Keen Dreams indiegogo campaign is the one that convinced me to contact Richard of Flat Rock Software to get the sources released. I have the other catacomb sources and they will be going up as soon as I get them cleaned up.

The whole catalog isn't being opened since I used ECWolf to convince Richard to open the 3D games. The first 2 catacomb games are just a bonus.

Edit: Oh yeah. He's very interested in seeing a source port of these games, so I promised that I would do them at some point. However, if anyone else has interest but just needs help with the ASM or something like that let me know.

@Blzut3: You've been contacting him about the source as well? That's cool. I know of several of us who had been.
I thought he was posting them himself, but noticed that they were pretty well cleaned up.

A port for Hovertank wouldn't be hard to do... it's just finding time. I've been messing around with using voxel block maps (ala Minecraft, etc) lately and learned some techniques from it.
I hope Mr. Mandel gets Hovertank released in more popular online stores like GOG soon because I really don't have a copy of the game data at the moment.

Yeah, but I mean for Hovertank. Blzut3 said it was compiled with Borland 2.0 but 3.1 would do too.

Yep, glad to be able to contribute in a way. Smile Blzut3 cleaned up the code and tidied it up for release. Smile

Well, Mr. Mandel sells the game thru virtualsoftware, it's available there, though a bit expensive at 10$.

Yeah, I've found that store and agree that it's pretty expensive at $10. I generally only buy through GOG online and like to keep things in one spot as much as possible.

I compiled the code, with Borland 3.1, and it compiles great, but the resulting .exe is like three times as big as the original one. Very Happy

You probably need to use LZEXE to compress the EXE... they used that a lot then.

I also remember Andy saying that he had to tweak some Borland settings before the Wolf3D EXE ended up exactly like the official version.

I can confirm that the editing notes in the sources mention using LZEXE. (The notes give an overview of how run the editor for the game data and how to build the game. Nothing especially interesting besides the release histories which I could release I guess, but they don't go much into specifics.)

All the sources that are going up are uploaded now.

As for GOG, it seems like they're rejecting a number of classic titles:

For Hovertank, I kind of understand; it runs very poorly in DOS Box, even though the framerate and controls are more than acceptable. The game display flickers non-stop for some reason; there's something about the screen-swapping that DOS Box is either misinterpreting or not interpreting at all. It's not as quite bad in The Catacomb Abyss, but even there, the flickering is still extremely distracting and hard on the eyes.

Kubuntu uses the same package repository as Ubuntu. Just different packages installed by default (KDE).

I have nothing more to announce. The port of The Catacomb was done on a whim to prove that it was possible, and in fact preferable, to port games from DOS to modern platforms in one step. I may do more soon, I may not even I don't know. There may be more details coming in an update to my weblog probably tomorrow.

I have no idea why you couldn't get a game controller to work as the port supports both the joystick and game controller APIs in SDL2.
