With MotM released there is no community project currently in progress on these forums. I think there's no good reason not to start the next one quite soon, but what should it be? I vote to try a MotM and DHW SDL style one or DHW TC simultaneously. As for the base game of any DHW SDL style (if it's not a DHW TC) project it might be best IMO to start off with simple Wolf3D or Spear at first and if that gets a fast turnout then if so aim for 20 or so maps and perhaps after it's done see if a move to a more advanced mod (like Spear Ress.) would work afterwards. However if there's enough clear interest already in using a more advanced mod as a base, then the DHW SDL style 'mod for a mod' could be opened right off the bat. So just my two cents on that regard.

Before doing a community-based project, you might find out what sort of mod people are interested in making maps for. If the mappers' interests seem diverse, you might try a mod that spans numerous eras - perhaps you'd play a superhero that has to defeat bosses in several different time periods.

I suspect that you, MrWolfForever, aren't going to contribute a map to either project. To me, it's a bit weird seeing someone pushing a project that isn't even going to be involved in it.

I've also never understood why Forever keeps suggesting these things, craving product without lifting a finger. I also recall I found it quite arrogant that he'd mention names (myself included) and try to coax them to get on with something when all he has contributed himself is a handful of obscure old map sets made with Creator and edited VSWAPs, especially to people like myself and Ron and a lot of others (forgot the thread) who have consistently put out product for ten odd years!

The point is just to make a decision on what to get started on, so the community me included had another community mod to enjoy!

I have suggested DHW SDL style something because I'm quite confident it'll get the most frequent submissions. The ones from 2010-12 really came together fast. No reason to think it won't do so again, so why not build on success?

No disrespect intended, but I really haven't seen much interest in today's Wolfers mapping for either DHW mod. While I have nothing bad to say about either mod, most of today's Wolfers haven't even mentioned the two in the past two years. Sad

And submissions to make an MMC mod? Why wouldn't they just submit a map to the MMC competition instead? I fail to see the point in that idea, either.

Don't get me wrong; I'm not against you starting up a mod. But if you want people interested in it, I suggest you read my first post in this thread and follow its advice. Smile

These are the same people looking up YouTube videos that other people have made, looking at status messages other people have written, posting stupid meme photos somebody else has made... If the new litter of members pulled themselves together and started something... I mean, Deathshead, myself and Metal Overlord put our heads together not three weeks after I joined to discuss a collaborative effort. Did it actually happen? No, but the idea was there, we were talking, we fed off of each other with information and ideas... It was great... Yeah, it would've been kinda crap had it actually materialized lol... But still, ideas were fresh and we kept bouncing them around. I keep hearing complaints on how there's nothing to play when there's a barrage of mods and map sets out there that still needs to be discovered. Another solution is this: Make your own. It's not that hard. Ipank could be the overseer of the whole thing. He runs the business mapping-wise these days IMO.

I kinda have to agree with Thomas here. If you want something to happen, get involved, don't just stand back and say 'I think you should do this, but I'm not going to be involved'. You may think your maps are poor or you don't know how to do something but we were all in the same boat at one time, experienced Wolfers just don't happen, they are created through practice and dedication. Anyone can map or code or do artwork and anyone can improve the more they practice.

If you don't try, you've failed before you've even started.

If I'm not mistaken, MWF did make a map submission to MMC. That's actually an excellent idea, as it's a good way to know what you've done right in your mapping, and what you've done wrong. Smile

I suppose Tricob's just sugarcoating to avoid any of us getting a coronary. [insert stupid smiley not furthering the conversation]

But for all his BS I think Forever had the right idea going when he suggested a bare bones map set. For Wolf, for Spear - The Lost Episodes even. I dare say I may contribute to one of these, as I freeze completely when there's as much as a textured ceiling added. I'm game...

I think I would be interested in the Lost Episodes as well, as there are relatively few mapsets for that one. On the condition that we get to change the ceiling colors. Mr Green

Well I won't promise anything but whenever I decide to try my hand at mapping I'll definitely consider Lost Episodes. What's pretty nice and cool is that the VSWAP for RTD and TUC don't entirely contain the same set of wall tiles, RTD has the atomic research theme and TUC is more traditional, if you get my idea. Both contain a couple of ugly ass walls (they should be obvious, I don't know their names, but if you can recall anything that looked bizarre or poorly edited then yeah).

Okay. Either I misread something he posted in the MMC thread, or my memory of his post is distorted ... either of which is a very real possibility. Razz

Thanks, except I thought his submission was for the current MMC, not any in the previous releases. We haven't made the mapper's identities public yet for this quarter. Smile

No guarantees, considering my track record, but I might have a go as well. A Lost Episodes mapset would be... something new. Certainly not a bad idea to try and see how much you can squeeze out of the amateurish audiovisuals and wacky setting.

So... I guess coding-wise we wouldn't need that much for it. Map-controlled floor/ceiling colors perhaps? No limits on objects/guards/doors? And how many levels? 21?

If you code it right, you wouldn't necessarily need a set number of levels. A bit of code I wrote averages out the percentages for every level that has a Par Time. If the level has a Par Time of 0:00, the code will assume the level is a secret level or boss level, and the percentages of that level are skipped.

Yeah - I guess I should post a code tutorial for how this is done. Rolling Eyes

It looks like it Smile Should we stick to the themes (Tunnels, Dungeons, etc.) or should it be more free-for-all style?

The LE levels weren't that thorough in sticking to the themes IMO so I think it should be free-form.

Yeah..... Well I'm looking forward to see what you guys come up with. I know I'll have a hard time making the texture palette roll easy (bar the blue stone and gray brick walls which are more in style with the original Wolf)... Let's see if we can color straightforward mapping canvases with these weird pastel WW2 cyberpunk Bizarro Wolf textures and GFX..... Never mind the sounds! lol!

Thematical progression wise it typically starts off in the submarine pen or lower duct levels, then builds into the rest of the complex with a more traditional look e.g. prisons, dungeons, or spliced with technology/atomic research labs or deeper castle levels later on. Fairly similar to the original Spear style. The two VSWAPs offer slightly different styles, or maybe one could make a mega VSWAP combining all of the textures so the 21 level game encompasses every type of scenario? I'm glad to see the interest has arised in this!
