The Golden Parrot

A life of adventures...
A life of dangers...
A life of combats...
A life of wealth...
A life of pirate!






The Golden Parrot is a pirate themed total conversion based on Wolf4SDL 1.7.
I had the original idea exactly 2 years ago from today. Although I didn't start right away, I progress slowly but surely.
The mod is meant to be fun in a unconventional universe, with however some realistic aspects making feel the particular ambiance of that period.

Here is some of the features:

-New graphics
-New weapons, with different usages and attack types
-New ennemies
-New bosses
-Textured floors and ceilings
-Merchant system (ability to collect money/sell items and buy improvements)
-New levels
-New sounds and musics
-A parrot!

I will post more soon, I have plenty of stuff but nothing really finished properly so far.

Must ... resist ... pun relating to the phrase "onboard" ... Smile

I'm definitely interested in seeing how this mod comes out. I'm quite certain there's a way to get the Wolf3D map structure to work with a pirate-themed game, but exactly how it'd be done is a method that eludes me. But it's probably a design technique that's far more obvious to everyone else than it is to me. So's life. Smile

Oh well, that's a good point, any kind of outside level in general are a challenge to me... always trying to break the strict squared design. I place my hope in the floor and ceiling textures that allow to mix inside and outside environments.

I am not yet in mapping phase, I will see what my instinct comes with when all elements of the mod are ready to be used. Maybe it will not work at all, but I am decided to try my chance.

I can't wait for this to be released!

Here's some feature suggestions:

-auto map (pirates always have a map)!
-mounted cannons (like the mg42 in Totenkopf SDL)
-animated water textures

Anyways I see that a lot of work has been done on this already, and I'm sure people here would be willing to help you if you need any assistance Smile

I like the suggestions...

I have been thinking of a compass (in lieu of the character face - but now I putt a useless changing color lantern), I am tempted by the map as a bonus item, but (silly question maybe) how are the secret walls handled in such case, are they displayed or... ?

There will be already a "hand" cannon (carryable), so no mounted planned currently, but I keep my mind open for this.

Very, very impressive. The bottom shot's horizon actually looks as if the player is stranded on an island. Again - a fresh concept, even well into Wolf's 24th year... That deserves a tip off the old hat too.

The left Blackbeard won, but I like the right because the belt looks like to be full of ammo like mexican outlaws in cowboys movies.

I am right now working on a armored monkey boss, will try to post stuff more regularly.

It is still in active progress Smile , but it doesn't progress that fast because I am alone for code, graphics, sounds, maps etc... I am enjoying and taking my time, really building it stone by stone and measuring carefully each new idea and feature.

Today I have added an horse, I was thinking to possibly being able to eat it once killed to regain health...


I don't have new pics to post right now, but I will give more details about the characteristics and progress:


9 weapons, some have an alternative attack to unblock.

1. hook (it is a false hook, the hero actually got 2 hands otherwise he couldn't use the other weapons)
2. silex pistol
3. cutlass
4. blunderbuss
5. musket
6. handcannon
7. holy chalice
8. boarding axe
9. parrot

They deal different damage types and have various attack ranges and speed.


Skills, there are more than 50 to unblock. To do so you have to buy them from a merchant.
They can improve a specific weapon, the general character abilities, or be specific to exploration.

You can collect gold in the maps, mainly by explorating non-mandatory areas and secrets. Potentially as a reward of killing famous pirate enemies.
It is also possible to sell silk and relics to merchants.

The combats are balanced between close and ranged, you might need hybrid combination like firing a shot and then finish with cutlass, enemies can be pirates, imperials soldiers or undead.
Sharks and lava are also a threat in this world, while civilians and horses will never hurt you. Killing by pleasure is not always rewarded.

Maps are up to 128x128 (but not every map will use all that space!). They will usually contain a large amount of secrets (pushwalls and hidden areas), but yet I am not sure if there will be actual secret levels.
There will be around 15 maps in the base game. Floor and ceilings are textured (but can still use a plain color - I don't want to overload the display when not necessary). There is no elevator to exit, instead you have to walk through a special floor. There will be flags in the wall to inform that is the area of exit.

Gameplay is WASD + mouse (right click for secondary attack). Space to use, and in case you wonder, there is no jump button.

Most of the remaining work is sounds/musics and mapping.

Can help out with the music, if needed. Always down for some composing Smile Good to hear this is still progressing, good luck finishing it! Looks like many people are looking forward to it, and for a good reason. It looks really fun, colorful and with a different theme than usual.

Just a quick status update:

*some good progress was made on sounds and music, almost everything is covered now (nothing was retreived from original audio)
*an automap was implemented, and as well a possiblity to improve its accuracy (buy to merchant)
*5 maps are ready (but not yet tested)
*some more "balancing" work was performed
*some more (minor) graphical work was performed

Here is some more insight about the weapons present in the game, this arsenal will make you a mighty pirate:

1. Hook
Landindg alone in the new world is very risky, wearing a false hook offers the double advantage of feigning a disability and a small weapon to defend himslef.
Type of damage: physical
Available upgrades: none


2. Pistol
The flintlock pistol is a versatile weapon, efficient at short range and fair at long range.
Type of damage: physical
Available upgrades: 9


3. Cutlass
The classic pirate sword: handful and accurate!
Type of damage: physical
Available upgrades: 3


4. Blunderbuss
A powerful short ranged weapon, ideal for those not liking subtlety, or not good at aiming. Also the easiest to reload.
Type of damage: physical
Available upgrades: 9


5. Musket
The best pirate rifle more than decent at long range.
Type of damage: physical
Available upgrades: 9


6. Hand cannon
One must be strong to carry it, but it is fully worth!
You can even destroy building columns, would they be on the way.
Type of damage: explosive
Available upgrades: 4


7. Holy Chalice
A magic artifact alimented by mana. It is said that it is the only thing that allows to fight evil creatures.
Type of damage: magical
Available upgrades: 2


8. Boarding axe
A devastating weapon for close combat.
Type of damage: physical
Available upgrades: 1

9. Golden parrot
A magical driven parrot that is particularly difficult to avoid or take down for enemies.
Type of damage: magical
Available upgrades: 2
