Here's a small mapset containing 10 levels called The Virtue of Procrastination: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7510301/The%20Virtue%20of%20Procrastination.zip

Requires the original WL6-files (minus the gamemaps).

Enjoy! Smile

Always good to see Ron release something. It's especially nice to see him do those halls that are 2 squares in width; he always did those so much better than I. Smile

Experimental much? These are some design and aesthetic choices I don't think I've seen used lately. Not that I don't approve. There's some really cool stuff in this set. Kind of throws you back to the early years when mapsets still captured and built upon the slightly abstract feeling of the original game, because mappers weren't fixated (like me) on realistic designs yet. Very neat.

Thanks! That is really what I was going for, the more abstract feeling of the original game (and some experimental stuff of my own).

It works fine on my end using a SDL exe. What error do you get? Did you include the SDL DLL-files?

Decidedly oldschool design here from the look of the shots, I'll have to get around to it!

Funny that back when I was younger I didn't want to play any Wolf mods that weren't loaded with source code changes, but my appreciation of the classic game has since gone up in the last few years.

I've really been appreciating the original game a lot lately. Hadn't looked at it for quite a while, so it almost felt like I was rediscovering how truly great the game is at times, and how playful the mapping is in terms of playing with its conventions, the amount of variety in some of the levels and such. It's really still its own thing, and that's kinda neat. Smile

I have not played any of this mapset, but may I ask all the same: what motivated the name given to it?

Thanks,

Ariel

I was in the midst of exams and deadlines for various assignments when I created this, and I am prone to procrastination during those periods. It is a terrible habit. Laughing

What a peculiar set of levels. And I mean that in the best way possible. I really liked the puzzle elements that were in several levels... They reminded me somewhat of the secret levels in Operation: Letztershutz. I also noticed parts of the original E1L1, E1L5, E2L1, and E3L1. There may have been others, but I don't remember. I love to be playing a mapset and suddenly find myself in a part of an original level, however much it's changed. Always a pleasant surprise.

I finally got round to finishing the second episode. I really liked the designs... Very peculiar sometimes, but always fun. And the puzzle elements with the pac-men are pretty interesting, too. I hope episode 3 is on the way, because I really enjoyed the first two!

I'm a bit busier currently, vacation's over again. So haven't been able to work on it for a bit. Good news is: I already have the ideas for the maps, so it's a matter of turning the abstract brainfabrications into proper maps once I have some time to sit down and work on it again.

I'm impressed you can produce another episode in a week's time, it's been 11 days since I started mapping for Wolf and I'm only on my third level! But then again you've been doing it for a while. I'll have to play these when I get the chance.

Well, the maps don't always come that easily, unfortunately. Episode 2 + the first half of episode 3 just happened to be parts where I was really inspired and really wanted to map. And also, a lot of time on my hands, that helps too. Mr Green But now I have relatively little time to map, so the whole time progresses a lot more slowly because of it.

Just want your personal insight, since the development was a bit more 'troubled' here: Do you think the episode overall should still be on par with the first two?

I think so.. at the very least, it contains my favorite map of the whole set. Smile But I think that if you enjoyed the first 2 eps, you'll enjoy this one as well.

I'm not talking a single map, I'm asking do you think most of them are about to the same standard? I just hope this didn't get rushed at all in its more intermittent development?

E3M8 is quite a creative idea! And here I was thinking you have to add code to implement 'switches'...

The maps were quite the opposite of rushed actually, I labored over some of these more than I did for the ones I created for the previous 2 episodes. When I made those first 2, I had a lot more free time + I had not mapped for the original Wolf3D in a really long while, so everything felt a lot fresher. But once the novelty of rediscovery wears off, it's just a matter of trying to find something that is inventive enough to create a map out of. But these maps are, as far as I'm concerned, definitely on par with the rest.

And thanks, I quite enjoyed creating that one! Smile

Played first levels yesterday, I like how long is for MP40 to appear...and that at first you can kill SS but not get MP40...After using pistol for so long MP40 feels so powerful....cool effect.
