What is this, why and how do I get it back?
I seem to have my maps back, so here's a garbled map data appreciation thread.

Or maybe I will use the maps here for episode 6 unchanged since the theme is supposed to be "surreal".

Island/Holiday GAMEMAPS + MAPHEAD = maps
Black Sheep AUDIOT + AUDIOHED = music and pc/adlib sounds
Film or Show VGAGRAPH + VGAHEAD + VGADICT = menu/status/intermission graphics, demos
Plane VSWAP = in game graphics (enemies, walls, objects), digitized sounds

... as a general rule for success.

Okay, cool, I was wondering if somebody could determine what kind of corruption is that by looking at the gamemaps file. I had the project opened with Chaosedit and WDC at once but I'm pretty certain I didn't save anything.

We need the MAPHEAD file too to have any way to (reliably) open it.

Good point. I wasn't thinking too much when I made this thread.

In other news, I ended up retrieving my maps. And I think it might be actually maphead that messes things up. Also, it seems to be different gibberish every time I open it.

My top 3 favorite gibberishes so far:


The "Objects are walls and walls are objects from the previous map" theme is more apparent than before.

There was also empty gibberish of single strings of walls, which was map names read as tiles, or something like that? But I can't guess what is the checkered pattern supposed to be.

You might rename the MAPHEAD file to something else, run the GAMEMAPS file through ChaosEdit, have it re-create the MAPHEAD file, and see what it spawns.

The 2nd one looks pretty interesting, reminds me of Level 256 in Pac-man.
