I never noticed before until quite recently that you don't have the option to turn on the PC speaker sounds in 4SDL. I was discussing it a bit with Balames87/JohnLobo87 in the comments of this video of SoD ECWolf, where it is an option to turn those sounds on. Would it be possible to add it in 4SDL? And would it be possible to play multiple PC speaker sounds ala the normal sounds in 4SDL? Now that would be a pretty cool addition. Smile

I think it would be but I don't think they'd sound like they did on DOS.

They don't even sound right on DOSBox. The ECWolf emulation is the closest I've heard, but it's still not exact.

Yes, the ECWolf emulation sounds good! I'm fine with something close to the original in 4SDL, though. And multiple pc speaker sounds at the same time would be quite a big leap.

Nice. I know two versions now, one from ljbade from Chocolate Doom and one by K1n9_Duk3 for ECWolf (also in CatacombSDL).

Ripper did make a test exe with the ljbade one and seemed excited to add it around that time, don't know what happened to the idea. I recall sometimes sounds played too fast and the pitch was too high and wonky and not sharp enough in SDL though.

edit: The door sounds and machine gun firing sound in that ECWolf video sound comically cheezy for instance. I'll try to record what they sound like from a real PC Speaker in a bit, if I can find some kind of microphone around here somewhere. Laughing

Cool stuff, Chris! Too bad Ripper never got around to finishing it (is he still active nowadays? Haven't heard from him in years). Even a really close approximation of the original pc speaker sounds would be really cool to have in 4SDL, but it is noticeable indeed that the sounds get a bit wonky on occasion.

It depends on what computer you're comparing it to. DOS Box is actually quite faithful to the PC speaker sounds my 80286 machine used.
