I am not sure whether this is the right place for this topic, but I am going to add this here.

For a while now I have had my own YouTube channel, where I randomly upload videos of my playthroughs (mostly Touhou or Wolfenstein related)... Nothing special, just me playing mods I find interesting:
- List of Wolfenstein 3D related playlists
- Wolfenstein: Old blood

If you have suggestions for mods to play, please feel free to add a comment. Currently I am working my way through the Absence SDL, but once that is complete I have not clear idea what to try next (maybe something from Team Raycast).

I think it's too early for you to decide at this point in time. I think you have to go through most of the playthrough before you find out what you want to play in a mod next, and what you don't. That's just the way it works sometimes. Smile

Yeah, you might be right... Well, let's see when I am closer to completing Absence SDL.

Orb of Dilaaria would be a cool option. One of the few big mods that no one has done a full playthrough of.

Writing that down to the list... That would be rather interesting to do as there was quite many alternative routes.

It's intended to be a 30 level game but I used multiple saves when I played it and got to experience the 30 other possible levels you could visit, including 5 different finale levels and it's pretty crazy how much work was put into this. Next time I play I'll have to choose a path and just stick to it heh.

I got stuck halfway through OoD and never finished it >.<

It could really use an SDL port.

It's a really, really excellent mod. It looks like a complete new game altogether; the graphics, the beyond extraordinary maps, and the code features (the alternate paths addition remains my favourite code change ever implemented; the replay value it adds is awesome) make it a tall order to imagine this is in fact a modification of another, and so different, game and not an original product.

Indeed you get to play 30 levels, but there are 65 in total. Here you can see all possible ramifications:

http://winwolf3d.dugtrio17.com/wiki/Orb_of_Dilaaria#Map_List

I highly recommend to anyone that hasn't given this one a fair try to do so, even if it is through DOSBox or something similar until someone takes up of their time to port it to SDL.

Cheers,

Ariel

The DOSBox port works quite well, actually. But to anyone else than Adam doing an SDL port: good luck Mr Green Still one of the most advanced mods ever.

That's right, of the five chapters there is one secret level for each totaling the map count at 65. It really was one of the greatest experiences Wolf3D has ever given me and I wish it was more popular among non-Wolfers when it comes to game mods. Especially standalone ones, which are literally free games for download. I did advertise Absence SDL once on an old forum I used to go to as a free game to try.

Wow, Orb of Dilaaria looks pretty interesting! A very innovative idea for sure. I hope it wouldn't lag too much on DOSbox, I had this problem with a feature-heavy DOS mod before and virtual overclocking didn't fully solve it.

The lack of speed in DOSBox is why I bought an old XP laptop and stuck VDMSound on it.

DOS Box runs all the Wolf mods well enough on my system. However, my machine has x86 support and quad-core processing to boot.

What does not run so well on it is Tetripz, which has never, ever run properly on DOS Box ... no matter how high the CPU Cycles are cranked up. The source code for that game has never been released, so I don't expect a Windows port in the future. It's probably 99% Assembly-Language code anyway, so trying to port it to anything at all will be a real chore.

I've always found DOSBox to run to fine apart from being incredibly stuttery on a lot of stuff, no matter what the cycles are set to. The only game I really find it useful for is Wrath Of Earth, and that's only because it literally won't run except in DOS with EMS and XMS off.

The stuttering means that the CPU Cycles are set higher than the emulator can keep up with. You can increase the Frame Skip count to fix this problem.

The stuttering isn't consistent, either. It's usually at its worst when the number of sound layers being played simultaneously goes beyond a certain number.

It happens even when it's set to auto, or even as low as 30000. I have an i7, it should be able to handle that.

Anyway, the XP laptop copes fine with things Smile

One last thing - With most hardware, as little as 20,000 Cycles is really pushing it.

I never found it playable in Auto mode, personally; the control gets too erratic. Keeping it at one CPU Cycles setting made it much more playable for me ... even if the framerate was lousy. If the game's response to the controls isn't consistent, it's just not very practical to play. Sad

I have an i7-3770K, I can use at least 80000 without issue (well, without running into any more issues, anyway).
