I thought that this is the most appropriate place for me to post about Windows Vista’s end of support.

It seems like
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/22882/windows-vista-end-of-support and https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/13853/windows-lifecycle-fact-sheet#section_1
indicated that April 11, 2017 will be the last updates for Windows Vista SP2.

Maybe in April, I should take this Vista computer that I’m typing on now, update it, install Roxio, turn the computer off, put it in the kitchen where I don’t need an internet connection, & use it to copy my friends’, family’s, & relatives’ VHS tapes to digital. I can set up a Windows 10 computer in my den for email, Wolfenstein 3D, & modern games. That’s my opinion about what I should do.

I would like to stay on the Wolfenstein 3D forums at least until 2020 though.

EDIT: I put this in the wrong section by mistake. Please move this to the Howling Wolfers' section.

Wolf4SDL runs just as well under Windows 10 as it does under Vista. The last big change on the Wolf3D front was the transition from XP to Vista/7, where NTVDM no longer worked so you had to rely on DOSBox or SDL to play Wolf. I don't see any issues at all moving past Vista for anything Wolf. I would consider at least upgrading to Windows 7 if not 10. Windows system requirements haven't really changed much since Vista.

In Windows 8 the mouse used to not work with Wolf4SDL, but somebody found a code fix, that is available in the tutorials section

Here's a little known fact: In almost all cases, compatibility issues with newer versions of Windows are the application developer's fault, not Microsoft. They occur because the application was written the wrong way.

In some cases, they caused problems even in older versions of Windows; the problems just usually weren't visible.

This is especially true of OpenGL and DirectX games. OpenGL and DirectX were designed from the beginning to have full backward compatibility. If they don't, it's either the application's fault, or the driver's.

I was the one who wrote that tutorial.

This problem occurred with many games, including Wolf4SDL, when Windows 8.1 was released, but it mostly doesn't occur anymore.

It occurred because many games do relative mouse input the wrong way -- by warping the cursor to the center of the screen every frame and calculating the relative offset, instead of getting the deltas directly.

Although the issue mostly no longer occurs, it still should be fixed. That change really should be added to the official version of Wolf4SDL. There is no reason for it to be written the way it was -- it is just poor programming.

Even in older versions of Windows, it makes mouse input far smoother and more precise.

I'll add it when I get the chance; possibly tomorrow Smile
