Who on here plays DooM mods and if you do, what are some you really enjoyed? (I'm talking about single player wads or mods that contain new levels. Not just gameplay mods and not multiplayer.)

Also, what DooM mod or wad, if any, are you currently playing? What do you think of it (so far)?

My favourites would be Threshold of Pain, Vanguard, Lunatic, and The Ultimate Torment & Torture episodes. The "Doom the Way ID Did" episodes are very good, too.

All of those are great mods, I agree! Did you ever try Valiant? It's by the same author as Vanguard/Lunatic and IMO superior in every way. If you don't like the custom content, there is a 'Vaccinated Edition' available.

I don't really keep up with what goes on over at Doom World, so thanks for telling me about Valiant... I just checked it out, and it looks great! I'll definitely play it when I get the chance.

I'm in KDiZD right now. Through E1M4. E1M9 was a bit average but other than that I've been pretty satisfied.

I also like Pirate DooM but not as keen on the rest of them. Aliens in particular is from 1994 and it really shows its age. Even the install and start up process is archaic.

Knee Deep in ZDoom kind of reminds me of Doom 3, but with a bit more action. A lot of dark, horror/survival areas and a lot of switch hunting. All in all, it's a very well-done, detailed mod.

I haven't found most of the switch hunting to be that big of a deal though as most switches either operate on something fairly nearby and/or they have a monitor next to them that shows what they did.

I think a lot of the negative feedback KDiZD got at its release was because of all the hype and people possibly expecting an experience and atmosphere more akin to the original E1. That's not what KDiZD really has on offer, and I'm not saying it's a flawless product, but I think if you look at it with a 'clean' lense it won't be hard to find a lot of good.

ps If you want a mod that has designs and areas at least mostly based off the original E1 layouts, but also maintains mostly the same feel and atmosphere as E1, then I think Phobos Revisited, not KDiZD, is the best pick for that.

Knee Deep in ZDoom is very well designed, but the levels are very large and expansive and sometimes its hard to find keys and doors. I personally don't think this mapping approach works as well in the Doom engine as it does Wolf3D. It's still a great wad though, I just have to be in the mood for that kind of gameplay.

I love the music and atmosphere in that map, but there isn't a lot of actual gameplay.

@Arielus I think Batman, Equinox, Fava Beans, Icarus, and the first Memento Mori have all aged very poorly, but the others are good indeed. The latest release date for any of these was in 2003 though and there's been a lot more since then.

@Barry Just to inform, I left a message with some explanation of my general thoughts on this regard.

Playing Reverie, a 2011 wad that looks and feels more like something around 1996. Pretty good though. AWESOME soundtrack! Map08 is like three different levels in one and has a pretty interesting puzzle to get out of the blue key area. Map10 is a tad too convoluted for its own good.

I recommend Stronghold, a kind of progressive tower defense where you can buy improvements and resist to 10 waves of enemies in various original levels.

I'm sorry to say it'd be absolutely impossible in Wolf, as the enemies shoot through each other rather than shoot each other's backs. It is an interesting thought, though. Smile

Well, that's not so hard to change... I've had enemy projectiles hitting and killing other actors before. I didn't keep it though, because, while it makes sense that demons and monsters fight among themselves, it looks very silly when human soldiers do it to their buddies.
