Well, "Map Of The Month" wasn't really a relevant term any more, was it Wink

Yes, folks, welcome to the inaugural round of the Diehard Wolfers' Mapping League! It's almost exactly the same as the MMC was, just more appropriately named. The new kit, however, has quite a few changes, so I'll explain them now.

Firstly and most significantly, instead of the map settings being based on tile values in the map itself, there is now an additional file that specifies all of these values (and more, which will be explained later). This file is called "mapinfoxx.mmc", where xx is the number of your map in the file (first map is 00, second map is 01, eleventh map is 10, etc.). It's a simple file that consists almost entirely of comments and "key = value" lines. As a result of this, a number of the settings are now more flexible - ammo, health and treasure items can give negative values, map names can be longer than 16 characters, and the par times can be given to the second.

If this sounds confusing, the file itself is well commented to explain how to use the new system, and I am also more than willing to help people work with it. Smile

Secondly, there are a few more changes to the kit other than those:

- Most of the missing Lost Episodes textures have been added, including the LE elevator door; along with this, a few textures from Blake Stone that fit the palette and (mostly) fit the art have also been included

- The pushwall system has now been significantly upgraded, with a total of eight groups of pushwalls and a wider variety of objects now available, as well as the modifiable settings now being modifiable per group, and a new setting for each group that determines if it should be considered a secret. The pushwall system now consists of the following objects for each of the eight groups:

- A normal pushwall; these work as before, but have the speed, distance and behaviour of the pushwall of the group they are in, but otherwise no relation to it

- The normal four directionally switched pushwalls and the switch for the group

- A new set of four directionally switched pushwalls that also themselves act as a trigger for the group when pushed (be careful with these, because if the player activates this pushwall from the side it would travel in they will die immediately Very Happy)

- A 'normal' pushwall that will also trigger the group when used

- An object that will trigger the group when another pushwall runs over it

- An object that will trigger the group when the player runs over it

- An object that will simply remove the wall it is placed on when the group is triggered

- The teleporter system has also been signficantly upgraded; there is now a single teleporter object, and an object to land in each of the cardinal and ordinal directions, and these are matched to one-another by floor code-like objects in the map plane, similar to the pushable item flag. Each teleporter group has its own set of environmental settings that can be set when teleporting with that group (or optionally have the group not change any of such settings), as well as the ability to pick one of eight colours for the teleporters of that group to be (or it can be invisible), whether or not it should teleport the player instantly instead of fading out and in, and whether it should place the player relative to the tile they were in and not re-orient them (the basic map included gives an example of what this can be used for)

- The player start can now be diagonal

- Tricob's directional flag and flagpole has been added

At this point, I only have Chaosedit and WDC symbols available. I'm working on some HWE symbols, and Tricob has kindly volunteered to make Mapedit symbols, so when those are ready I'll add them to the kit (although if someone is interested in making the rest of the HWE symbols they'll probably get them done faster than I will). I also haven't had a lot of opportunity to exhaustively test the new features, so if you find any bugs or problems, please let me know.

As far as contest structure goes, I think the approach from the previous MMC, namely "wait until we have 5ish maps then set a deadline of a month or two for anyone else to finish their maps" seems to work well, so unless anyone has any objections to that, I'll work by that for now.

Finally, although it's not currently the case (or currently relevant), I will be reworking the EXE so that any future Mapping League EXE will be able to play the sets released prior to it as well, essentially creating the anthology as we go. I'm hoping to update the MMC Anthology with the SDL sets as well so that it covers the entire span of the MMC, but that will likely take me a while.

Grab the kit here!

Good mapping Smile

Finally, I can be a part of the Map of the Month (Yay!), or rather, as it is now:
"The Diehard Wolfers' Mapping League"
It sounds so prestigious!

Good timing, AlumiuN; I need to back up my files again. Smile

Sorry I haven't gotten back to you on the MapEdit version of the files; getting a large chunk of time to learn the new tools has been a hassle lately. Sad

I've updated the kit to make the pushwall switch tiles actually work and fix the treasure pickup messages being rather wrong.

EDIT: It was broken when I posted this, but it works now Razz

It should be noted that a new sample map is included. When I familiarize myself more with how the new features work, I'll see about updating AlumiuN's original test map or making my own. The map included now only explores a fraction of how the new EXE works. Smile

Oh boy... the new features sound real exciting... so now besides switches, we also have walk-over triggers among other things? Now the possibilities are gonna get even more endless than before! I can't wait to play around with that new stuff once I have time...

Looks like the Map of the Month contest has officially come to an end - at least under said denomination. *sheds a tear*

I like my sporadic dose of trivia on things I am interested in, so here's some:

- We held the Map of the Month contest for exactly 10 years (the first package came out in June of 2007; the last package, in June of 2017)
- We had exactly 10 packages, making an average of 1 package per year
- We had 97 maps in total, making an average of nearly 10 maps per package
- We had 102 maps in total if we count the 5 "lost and found" maps we can play out of the Anthology pack
- We had a total of 24 different contributors, making this community effort the most varied in terms of mappers to date (5 more than the 10th Anniversary rendition of Beyond Mutantstein Special Edition, which, I think, held the record before)
- ronwolf1705 participated in all 10 editions with a total of 14 maps (!!!)
- The 10th package was by far the tighest in terms of what people voted for, with 3 maps coming in 1st, 4 maps coming in 2nd, and 2 maps coming in 3rd - certainly a nice way to give closure to this thing with so many different folks sharing the podium

Back on topic now, the future looks bright and hats off to AlumiuN once again for so much spare time and quality put into this thing. I will give you a strong handshake if life ever finds me spending time in Christchurch.

It looks like we have some decent learning curve to go through! The new features sound superb, and the fact that we can make use of them via a text file will no doubt make them more flexible (and scalable, meaning that we will no longer need to set aside any squares in the 64x64 canvas and sacrifice room for the actual map).

I like this idea a lot:

AlumiuN wrote:

And I think this would be great too:

AlumiuN, how would you feel more comfortable hearing about bugs and/or enhancements? Shall we post messages right here, send you PMs, emails, smoke signals?

Best,

Ariel

Will your executable have two-button strafing, uncapped mouse movement, and an option to disable the Y axis to allow for a WASD control scheme? If you add those, then I'd probably do some maps for it, but I'm through with 1992 tank controls.

Are the map symbols supposed to come with the kit? I don't see them anywhere.

Any of the above is absolutely fine Smile

It doesn't currently, but I'll take a look at adding it; I actually prefer to use that system too, so I'm not sure why I hadn't thought of adding it.

As it was easier than I thought it would be, I've added an option to the control menu called "Enable Modern Controls"; this makes the 'turn left and right' controls into 'strafe left and right', makes the player run by default, and disables the mouse's Y axis and the clamping on the mouse's X axis, so you can use WASD controls Smile

Please remove the name; we run this on an anonymous basis so that people don't know the author of the maps until the voting has finished.

I've uploaded a fix that makes the par times correct and also applies a small colour tweak to one of the new textures (specifically the coloured vertical pipes).

I've uploaded another fix that makes the pushwall tile triggers work properly and makes the map name be read correctly from the file.

My apologies for there being so many bugs and updates with this. I've not had a lot of energy recently, so my testing has been fairly brief. Hopefully this should be the last of the significant fixes.

No need to apologise at all in my view. Quite the contrary - thanks so much for all the effort put into this. I have set things up on my end (the temporary lack of MapEdit definition files has motivated me to transition over to WDC) but I have not yet tested things thoroughly. I am hoping I can get acquainted with the new kit within a reasonable timeframe and, provided I come across anything I deem worth pointing out, I'll be sure to report back.

Best,

Ariel

I'll take responsibility for the lack of MapEdit files. I'll try to get the files done this weekend. Smile
