I recently purchased this book after looking at a preview of it here...

Quote:
How was Wolfenstein 3D made and what were the secrets of its speed? How did id Software manage to turn a machine designed to display static images for word processing and spreadsheet applications into the best gaming platform in the world, capable of running games at seventy frames per seconds? If you have ever asked yourself these questions, Game Engine Black Book is for you. This is an engineering book. You will not find much prose in here (the authorís English is broken anyway.) Instead, this book has only bit of text and plenty of drawings attempting to describe in great detail the Wolfenstein 3D game engine and its hardware, the IBM PC with an Intel 386 CPU and a VGA graphic card. Game Engine Black Book details techniques such as raycasting, compiled scalers, deferred rendition, VGA Mode-Y, linear feedback shift register, fixed point arithmetic, pulse width modulation, runtime generated code, self-modifying code, and many others tricks. Open up to discover the architecture of the software which pioneered the First Person Shooter genre.

You can get it for paperback here. The layout is superb, easy to read and understand, plus it contains coloured screenshots and pictures from the game itself! I can't recommend it enough! ;-D

Thank you for posting the news. It is really cool to see that somebody likes the game so much that they'd invest the time to write a 300+-page book on it.

Do you know if it can be purchased in PDF format?

Best,

Ariel

I have another black book (hardback) that covers multiple Id game engines. Not sure if it covers Wolf3D, but I know it covers scrolling platformers like Duke Nukum. Not 100% sure where it is right now.

@Ariel I think it was originally intended to be a free PDF, but as it grew in scope, that idea was abandoned. You should be able to get it as an eBook though.

@Aryan_Wolf3D Thank you for sharing this news! I enjoyed reading some of Fabien Sanglard's game engine reviews in the past, but I wasn't aware yet of the book.
I bought the paperback version. It's both very enjoyable and educational to read. Amazing how many clever programming tricks were absolutely necessary to get the game performance on an acceptable level. Surprised

Apologies for the double post, but I thought it would be interesting to share that Fabien Sanglard has just released a second edition of his Game Engine Black Book: Wolfenstein 3D.
The second edition adds some new content, some fixes and a foreword by John Romero and Tom Hall. It can be obtained in digital form via Google Play. A paperback version will become available soon. More details can be found on Fabien's Twitter page.

Also, on December 10th, the Game Engine Black Book: Doom will be released. This new book describes the Doom engine and the 486 micro processor. I enjoyed the Wolfenstein 3D book a lot, so this new book is a must-buy for me.

Moderators, please correct me if I'm wrong, but AFAIK, a "double post" is where you post the same message in more than one thread. But as far as I see here, Arno's post is nothing more than a legitimate update, and it has relevant information. Smile

Yes, no harm done as far as I can see. Plus, had he decided to edit his previous message instead of posting a new one, then the update would not have popped up in anyone's unread posts (since as far as I understand, edited posts do now show as new if you've already read the original, unedited post). This would have prevented others from becoming aware that there was an update in the thread.

Best,

Ariel

Thanks! I assumed it was OK to add an additional post, based on the reasons mentioned by Arielus. I was just a bit cautious, as I'm not familiar with common practices on this forum.

@Arno Thanks for the news, I'm sure the Doom book will be worth buying too.

Very cool. I wonder if 2nd edition fixed the error that said the 3-episode version was never released, as he wrote on twitter:

"Errata have been addressed. John Romero and Tom Hall wrote a foreword and fact-checked it all."

I've never bought anything on Google Play or Amazon before. Just been reading what I can find from "samples" so far of this book and it seems really neat. I can't imagine anything more fun to read on the bus than a giant book about wolf3d and how it's engine worked back in the 90s. It looks like the ebook is a much better deal though currently ($10 vs. ~$40).

The second edition of the Game Engine Black Book: Wolfenstein 3D is now available on paper via Amazon: USA, UK, FR, CA, etc.

Fabien wrote a blog post about the new edition of the Wolfenstein 3D book, in which he also explains how the price of the book was established. Apparently, the author only gets about $2.00 per book sold. Shocked

As with games and music bands, the publishers and labels take the most. Quite sad to see that amazon takes so much money and that even at 45$ only so little is left.
