This topic is not about Wolf ROTT mods. I like Rise of the Triad: The Hunt Begins, Dark War, and Extreme, but I would rather have played Wolfenstein 3D Part II Rise of the Triad. Does anyone on here wish that Apogee and Id Software could have pulled off their original concept for Wolfenstein 3D Part II Rise of the Triad?

Rise Of The Triad seemed to lose something in its transition from idea to game. It seemed to me that it was actually supposed to take place in London in the 1960s, making a nod to the British invasion at the time. I notice how all the British-themed elements seemed to work for the game, but the rest didn't seem to work as well. I don't think having the game in the WWII setting would've worked any better for it. If I ever make a ROTT mod in the future, the 1960s British scene is probably the atmosphere I'd try to create ... using The Avengers 1960s TV show as partial inspiration. But this is all just my personal interpretation. Smile

Really? I thought that somebody from Apogee, ID Software, or Formgen took a vacation to San Nicolas Island somewhat near California and Mexico. He liked it so much that he worked San Nicolas Island into the Rise of The Triad story.

Wikipedia said that the island was one of eight candidates for the atomic bomb test before Trinity was decided on. I read Island of The Blue Dolphins, which was mentioned on the same wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Nicolas_Island

Well, I'm not saying that this actually *was* Apogee's plan. I'm just saying that the design seemed to have British influence in mind without the developers even knowing it. Smile

This is pretty much off topic. In the mid 1990s, I played Jumping Flash or Jumping Flash 2 at a store display once. I think that my character fell too far and died. Wolfenstein 3D doesn’t have y-axis depth like Rise of The Triad, Doom, and Jumping Flash do. Something about the platforming, power-ups, blockiness, depth, and absurdity of it reminded me of Rise of The Triad. I love ROTT and I think it's very atmospheric and interesting in all areas - music, features, visuals.
So don't know what settings they tried to depict - they at least made it immersive and consistent, ROTT-feel places that are so different from all other games.
ROTT is quite perfect as a game. With fantastic mapping it took me many years just to notice all walls are 90 degrees. And standing on sprites/elevator pads made it more advanced than many games of that time, and those jumping pads and the non-human hazards and those gibs and cool multiplayer modes ...and...love ROTT.
Love the gameplay, weapons, pace, the large open spaces.

Yes, would be cool to see scrapped Wolf3D 2 version as well, regardless.

I wonder… If ROTT was supposed to take place in London in the 1960s, then where are the accents, James Bond, The Beatles, and Monty Python?

I always loved the way that ROTT blended completely silly features with fun and creative map design; it makes it a fun jaunt, with less frustration when losing because you're already laughing excessively!

However, the original concept sounded great, and someone seems to be working on his take on it:

However, he hasn't been online for 2 years, so the chances seem pretty slim of the rest of the episodes getting added.

Exactly. Some of the British characteristics were there, but not all of them. No, I don't believe it was supposed to take place specifically in the 1960s. It had more a "James Bond" presentation to me than anything else. But since there were some elements there without others to make it gel, it felt really awkward to me. But again, that's just my perception of it all. Smile

I've played that. It's very fun, but it's tough. It has a deathmatch or co-op mode.

No, I am glad they didn’t go through with it. I’m glad they took what they had so far and expanded onto it to make a new game. Honestly, they didn’t seem all that interested in it until they turned it into its own game.

Rise of The Triad has Lorelei Ni and other characters. There was a document from about 1992 that Doom was originally planned to have Lorelei Ni and the other characters that turned up in Rise of The Triad. I thought that the document was a version of The Doom Bible. If these characters had gotten their own game, then it reminds me that Bombshell was originally going to be in Duke Nukem Forever or another Duke Nukem game before she had gotten her own game.

You should play Rise of The Triad. It reminds me of absurdism. Cult Leader El Oscuro has mystical powers and the cult members throw energy out of their hands. There's the Ex Calibat, dog mode to go underneath, god mode, and mushrooms that seem to distort your sense of balance.

I say that Rise of The Triad, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, and WolfenDoom have y-axis depth and Wolfenstein 3D is just one floor per level. There's a Wolfenstein 3D mod called Shadow Genesis Beta where when you reach a certain level, the level is more than one floor and has depth. I think that the screenshot is on The wolf3d.darkbb.com Shadow Genesis thread. I don't confuse Shadow Genesis with Shadow Warrior.
