Hi everyone. I've been lurking here for a few years and finally decided to join.

I've played Wolf3D, Spear of Destiny and so on since the 90s. I started with a 80286 computer and PC speaker sound, then various newer computers over the years.

Currently I use a 500 MHz computer running Win98SE for the DOS-based games such as Wolf3D, and it works perfectly well. The sound card is a AWE64 which sounds awesome.

My only tinkering with maps was to fix bugs in some mods that I found on various sites. Eventually I started work on new levels, but lost the lot in a virus attack.

So, recently I decided to download a bunch of modified levels that others have graciously made available here. Some worked well, some I couldn't quite get the hang of just yet, and annoyingly some had cheats disabled (I always use cheats, especially god mode). One of them (Absence) doesn't even run on Win98, but it does work on Windows 2000.

I noticed someone has made a SDL version (Wolf4SDL.exe), which runs quite well. The only problem is that pc speaker cannot be selected, I guess it was never implemented.

So, these days, I don't do any mods, just try out what others offer and point out bugs that are found. That's about it from me. Hopefully I am welcome here. Smile

If you want a version with PC speaker sound, you could build it from the Github source Smile

I didn't even realise there was a todos section in that readme, but there is actually PC speaker emulation, it got added not long after I set that repository up.

The "PC Speaker" feature wasn't very accurate the last time I checked it out. You can get many DOS-based mods running through DOS Box (which will have full PC Speaker support), but some mods probably won't have a good framerate unless you've got a fairly fast machine.

I think you're misremembering how PC Speaker sounds like on real hardware:

Anyway if you want it to sound like crap again (ie. Dosbox) in Wolf4SDL, just change these two things back:

That's actually how it sounded exactly with the 80386 my father used. Smile The Wolf4SDL EXE I used with PC Speaker emulation - the sound playback was a different speed, and some sound effects were playing back at the wrong pitch. However, I had stopped checking for updates on it less than 12 months after the feature was added.

Thanks for the welcomes Smile

One other thing I just noticed with Wolf4SDL is that the sounds are all played in mono, where as the original could have men shouting from the left or right.

Has this been fixed?
